Teens Ticketed for Rapping Their McDonald's Drive-Thru Order

Apparently rap has a bad rep at McDonald's drive-thru windows.

In yet another bizarre fast-food fable-turned-reality, four Utah teens received disorderly conduct citations following their ordering manner at a McDonald's drive-thru in American Fork, a small town south of Salt Lake City.

The teens apparently mimicked the popular YouTube jingle, which features rhymes to the likes of "Don't be frontin', son; no seeds on the bun!" They initially vocalized their order at a musical pace, then repeated it again slowly.

Culprit Spenser Dauwalder, 18, said the employees warned them that they were holding up the line, and they needed to order clearly or depart. Although he claims no one else was lined up behind him and his three 17-year-old friends, after the manager came out, the teens simply left -- but the store's manager took down their license information and contacted the police.

The police caught up with the teenagers at a high school parking lot and issued the citations -- which, according to Dauwalder's mother, are being contested.

'This Is Why You're Fat' Eat and Tweet Challenge

What do "dessert nachos" made of cookies and cakes, deep-fried dumplings and a loaded double cheeseburger have in common?

They were all on the menu for the This Is Why You're Fat "Eat and Tweet" challenge to celebrate the launch of the popular blog's new book of the same name (tag line: where dreams become heart attacks).

This Is Why You're Fat tweeted the locations of six Manhattan food trucks and the first person to send in pics of all six fattening treats won a party for 25 friends from the food truck of their choice and a copy of the "This Is Why You're Fat" book by blog founders Jessica Amason and Richard Blakeley.

See what folks ate after the jump.

Colonel Sanders' Hometown Makes Peace with KFC Icon

There are statues of Colonel Harland Sanders standing sentry at KFC outlets across Asia, but the town where the legendary restaurateur opened his first café has long resisted memorializing the man many locals consider a fast-talking, two-timing scoundrel.

"There are a lot of people here who knew him from way back," sighs Suzie Razmus, newly appointed chair of the Corbin (Ky.) Tourism Commission. "How can I say this? He wasn't exactly ..."

Universally beloved?

"Yes, exactly," Razmus says, with the obvious relief of a publicity pro saved from uttering something more damning. "You hear stories about women and his colorful language that didn't sit well with a small conservative town. There are still people here that say he owes their great-aunt money, or he fired their grandfather."

Sonic Drive-In Founder Troy Smith Dies at 87

Troy N. Smith, an Oklahoman who turned a root-beer stand into the Sonic, America's Drive-In, chain has died at the age of 87 in Oklahoma City.

Smith opened the Top Hat Drive-In hamburger and root-beer stand in Shawnee, Okla., in 1953. Six years later, it became Sonic, a made-to-order fast-food company now dubbed "America's Drive-In," that currently has nearly 3,600 units in 42 states and serves 1 million people daily.

The chain was initially dubbed "Sonic" for its motto, "Service with the Speed of Sound," following its invention of curbside speakers in the 1950s, which allowed customers to order without leaving their cars. Smith also pioneered the use of parking lots that had angled parking spaces and overhead coverings.

These days Sonic is more popularly known for its value menu and drink combinations -- some 168,000 drink combinations make it what Sonic calls the "Ultimate Drink Stop."

Born in 1922 and raised in east-central Oklahoma, Smith served in the Army Air Corps before returning to the United States, where he would later operate milk and bread trucks. He expanded his business by opening various restaurants and cafes before founding Top Hat Drive-In. After opening three more Top Hat franchises, Smith unsuccessfully sought to copyright the moniker, changing it to the "speed of sound"-inspired title, "Sonic." The first Sonic opened in Stillwater, Okla.

Smith is survived by Dollie, his wife of nearly 70 years, a son, daughter, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, at 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Edmond, Okla.

KFC Under Fire for Colonel Sanders UN Grilled Chicken Stunt

kentucky fried chicken's colonel sanders gives away free grilled chicken outside the united nations

A KFC Colonel Sanders lookalike has caused a minor international incident.

Last week, KFC sent an actor dressed as chain founder Colonel Harland Sanders to the United Nations in New York to publicize its Oct. 26 UNFry Day for Kentucky Grilled Chicken. But it seems the actor and his entourage were a little too good as they were able to bypass United Nations security to pose for photos with Libya's Dr. Ali A. Treki, the current president of the UN Assembly.

"It should not have happened -- that I will stress, and very strongly," Michele Montas, spokeswoman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, told Canada's National Post. She added there was "some lapse in security," with a guard ushering the Sanders lookalike "into the U.N."

A KFC official told Slashfood on Thursday that they never planned to send the Colonel into the U.N.

"The KFC Colonel was in New York City for a Kentucky Grilled Chicken sampling event outside the United Nations," Laurie Schalow, a KFC spokeswoman told Slashfood. "While serving free chicken on First Avenue, he was invited inside by a U.N. staff member, along with a photographer who was documenting the event."

The chicken chain did send "a tongue-in-cheek letter to the U.N. requesting that they allow their employees to "unthink" their usual lunch routine and sample Kentucky Grilled Chicken outside the U.N.," she said.

"KFC has the utmost respect for the United Nations and this lighthearted event in New York City was in no way meant to undermine the important work that the U.N. does around the world," Schalow said.

What do you think? Should the Colonel have gone to the U.N.? Let us know in the comments below.

Iceland will soon lose McDonald's after the island's only franchisee decided to shutter the three fast-food restaurants he owns in Reykjavik.

Lyst Hr., Iceland's only McDonald's franchise holder, decided to close its restaurants next weekend because of the falling price of Iceland's currency, the Associated Press reports.

"The economic situation has just made it too expensive for us," Magnus Ogmundsson, the managing director the company told the AP. The restaurants will reopen under a new name, Metro, serving locally produced foods.

Iceland is the ninth country to lose all its McDonald's restaurants. The chain pulled out of seven countries in 2002, and in 1996, Barbados lost its only McDonald's due to slow sales, the AP said.

Everybody likes free chicken.

And anyone who walked through the doors of KFC Monday got one free piece of grilled chicken in the chain's third "UNFry Day" promotion. KFC is touting the grilled chicken as a healthier alternative to its fried varieties and has launched a Web site for its "Grilled Nation" of "UNfried" chicken eaters.

The previous promotions proved so popular, restaurants ran out of chicken and had to provide rain checks. This time, things seemed to be moving in an orderly fashion.

Slashfood hit the busy lunch hour in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y., where diners lined up -- sometimes up to 20 deep -- for free chicken.

Grilled Chicken Lawsuit Accuses McDonald's of Serving Cancer-Causing Meat

A new class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday in Connecticut alleges McDonald's, Burger King and Friendly's failed to warn customers that their grilled chicken could cause cancer.

The suit, filed by two Connecticut residents in the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut: Judicial District of Hartford, claims the chains failed to warn consumers that they're serving grilled poultry containing the compound PhIP, which the state of California considers to be a carcinogen. A similar lawsuit filed in California last month against KFC targeted the Colonel's Kentucky Grilled Chicken.

The Cancer Project, the nonprofit that filed the suit on behalf of the residents, says eating PhIP -- even in small amounts -- can increase one's risk of cancer.

"Consumers deserve to know that grilled chicken from McDonald's and other fast-food chains can increase your risk of cancer," Cancer Project President Dr. Neal D. Barnard said in a statement. "Even a grilled-chicken salad increases the risk of developing some cancers, including breast and prostate cancer."

But a McDonald's spokeswoman said customer "safety and well-being" is a "top priority."

"Scientific research shows that PhIP is naturally occurring, and is created when chicken is grilled -- whether at home -- or in a restaurant. It may be present at low concentrations in oven-broiled, pan-fried, and grilled meats, as a result of normal cooking," Cynthia Goody, McDonald's nutrition director, said. "There is no scientific evidence to suggest the small amount of PhIP that can be created as a by-product of cooking methods humans have employed for thousands of years, poses a health risk.

"Like other restaurant companies and food establishments, at McDonald's, we continue to look to the FDA and USDA for their guidance on PhIP," her statement continued. "Beyond that, because this is a pending legal matter, it would be inappropriate to further comment or speculate."
